Fall 2008 Art Classes
The WASHINGTON STUDIO SCHOOL is a community of artists
and students dedicated to the practice of Fine Arts with conscious
awareness of both historical traditions and contemporary experience.
Founded in 1985, WSS has offered classes in drawing, painting,
monoprint and drypoint printing and sculpture to adults and serious
teens in Bethesda/Chevy Chase. By relocating back to Washington in
2007, WSS's larger, more convenient space promises to accommodate more
students in the years ahead.
WSS's educational approach is unique in the Washington
area. Our intimate studio environment encourages dialogue between
instructors and students in an ongoing process of discovery. Our range
of programs includes classes, lectures, and workshops.
No less than 3-hour weekly classes provide the
opportunity to strengthen technical skills and, through demonstration,
critique and lectures, to comprehend the principal tenets behind the
major deliberations that shaped our visual heritage and form our future.
Students of all levels develop skills and gain mastery
through serious and focused instruction. Working from direct
observation in the studio, outdoors and in the study of masterworks at
Washington museums, students develop visual perception and
understanding of all the ingredients that make artwork.
WSS conducts classes in two 12-week terms in the Fall
and Winter, and two 8-week terms in the Spring and Summer. We also
offer a Drawing Marathon and a Portfolio
Development for Teens workshop. Our CERTIFICATE PROGRAM offers
committed students the opportunity to pursue a directed curriculum in
drawing, painting and sculpture.
Faculty at WSS are all practicing artists with degrees
in Fine Arts. They are eager and accomplished in sharing their
knowledge and experience, yet do not attempt to provide students with
easy formulas. In providing their students with an arsenal of skills,
they maintain sensitivity to each student's individual artistic
inclination.
